Malcolm Lewis: Quintessential LA crime noir novel. Sparse, bleak, dark. Nobody captures the gritty, seamy side of post-war Los Angeles like Ellroy, the same guy who wrote LA Confidential if you didn't know. One Amazon reviewer described it as "the most visceral book I've ever read." You certainly won't forget this in a hurry. Any fan of literary crime noir novels should read have this high on their list.

The first novel in Ellroy's so-called LA Quartet. Can't wait to read the rest.

The Hunter By Richard Stark photo
Malcolm Lewis: If you like crime noir you'll love this. Written in 1963, this is the first novel in the Parker series. I consumed it one greedy gulp this morning. I loved the fast-paced plot and the spare, no-frills prose. Apparently the basis of the 1967 movie Point Blank starring Lee Marvin and already added to my Netflix queue.

Check out the Amazon reviews for more opinions.

I'm delighted to see there are another 10+ Parker novels. I'll be reading them all in the very near future.

The Reversal By Michael Connelly photo
Malcolm Lewis: I feel like the more recent Connelly books have lost the power and sophistication of his earlier Harry Bosch LA Crime Noir books, but this is still an entertaining read if you want a pleasant way to kill some time on a plane or beach.

Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone photo
Malcolm Lewis: We just started reading this to our kids. having never read them before I was skeptical at first, but they really do seem to be well written and the kids seem enthralled by it. Maybe there's a reason they're so popular?! ;)

Also known as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in the US.
Kim LaFleur:
My kids really enjoyed this series several years ago when it first came out. I agree that the books are well written and in my opinion, far more interesting and creative than the movies ever were. In fact, I got bored with the later movie episodes as i felt it didn't do the book justice.

Philippe Halsman's Jump Book photo
Malcolm Lewis: One of the world's greatest portrait photographers spent six years asking his famous subjects to jump for him. Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, Richard Nixon and many others. Makes a great coffee table book or gift.

I paid $15 for my coopy a few years ago but they're selling for $200+ on Amazon now so maybe that gift suggestion was not such a good one ;)
