Author of the book grew up in my hometown (Mountain Home, ID) and left to join the Navy...eerily similar, but I didn't float down the Yangtze River. Steve McQueen, Candice Bergen, Mako (excellent character actor) Richard Crenna and Richard Attenborough before the Queen called him "Sir"...made quite an impression on me when I saw it in Japan as an idealistic kid.
